Biggest Ice Hockey Olympic Upsets

Olympic ice hockey has produced some of the most dramatic and unexpected moments in Winter Games history. Unlike professional leagues, the Olympics bring together national teams with different systems, player pools, and preparation time. That mix creates the perfect environment for underdogs to shock traditional powers. Over the years, a handful of games have stood out as true Olympic ice hockey upsets, changing tournaments and becoming part of sports history.

United States vs Soviet Union, 1980

No discussion of Olympic hockey upsets starts anywhere else. At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, a young and mostly amateur United States team faced the heavily favored Soviet Union. The Soviet squad had dominated international hockey for years and featured experienced, world-class players. The Americans were college athletes with little international experience.

In a tense and fast-paced game, the United States defeated the Soviet Union 4–3. The result stunned the hockey world and became known as the “Miracle on Ice.” The win did not immediately give the U.S. the gold medal, but it shifted momentum and remains the most famous upset in Olympic hockey history.

Belarus vs Sweden, 2002

At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Sweden entered the men’s tournament as one of the strongest teams, filled with NHL talent and expected to contend for gold. Belarus, by contrast, was considered a clear underdog and had far less star power.

In the quarterfinals, Belarus shocked Sweden with a 4–3 victory. A long shot from center ice late in the game slipped past the Swedish goalie, sealing one of the most surprising eliminations in Olympic hockey. The result knocked out a medal favorite early and proved that even powerhouse teams can fall in a single-elimination format.

Czech Republic’s Gold Medal Run, 1998

The 1998 Nagano Olympics were the first to include NHL players, and many expected Canada, the United States, or Russia to take gold. The Czech Republic, while respected, was not viewed as the top favorite.

Led by goaltender Dominik Hašek, the Czechs defeated Canada in a dramatic shootout in the semifinals and then beat Russia 1–0 in the gold medal game. Hašek’s dominant goaltending performance throughout the tournament turned the Czech team into unlikely champions and made their run one of the great Olympic upsets.

Germany’s Surprise Final Appearance, 2018

At the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, the absence of NHL players changed the balance of power. Still, traditional hockey nations like Canada, Sweden, and Russia were expected to dominate. Germany was not considered a serious medal threat.

Germany stunned Sweden in the quarterfinals and then defeated Canada in the semifinals to reach the gold medal game. Although they eventually lost a close final to the Olympic Athletes from Russia team, Germany’s path to the championship game was one of the biggest surprises in modern Olympic hockey.

Italy vs Canada, 2006

In the 2006 Turin Olympics, host nation Italy faced a star-studded Canadian team in the preliminary round. Canada was one of the tournament favorites and featured many NHL stars. Italy, meanwhile, was not known as a major force in international hockey.

Italy pulled off a shocking 2–0 victory, powered by strong goaltending and disciplined defense. While Canada still advanced in the tournament, the loss was a major early shock and showed how even powerhouse teams can be vulnerable in Olympic play.

Why Olympic Hockey Produces Upsets

Olympic ice hockey tournaments are short, intense, and often decided by single games. Teams have limited time to build chemistry, and pressure is high. A hot goalie, a few lucky bounces, or one moment of brilliance can change everything. Because of this, the Olympics remain one of the few stages where smaller hockey nations can realistically dream of beating the giants.

These upsets are a big part of what makes Olympic ice hockey so compelling. Every tournament carries the possibility that history will repeat itself and a new underdog story will be added to the list.
