How Freestyle Skiing Competitions Work

Moguls

Moguls is one of the original freestyle skiing disciplines and remains a core Olympic event. Athletes ski down a steep slope covered in tightly spaced bumps called moguls, which form naturally or are shaped by course builders.

During a moguls run, skiers must maintain speed and control while absorbing each bump with their legs. They also perform two aerial jumps, where they execute tricks in the air. Scoring is based on three main components: turns, aerials, and speed. Judges reward strong technique, precise control, and clean, well-executed jumps.

Moguls requires exceptional lower-body strength, balance, and coordination, as athletes must react instantly to the constantly changing terrain while still performing aerial maneuvers.

Aerials

Aerials is the most acrobatic discipline in freestyle skiing. Athletes ski down a short inrun and launch off a large jump, performing multiple flips and twists before landing on a steep slope.

Each jump is judged on takeoff, height, form in the air, difficulty, and landing. The degree of difficulty plays a major role, with more complex tricks earning higher potential scores. However, execution must be clean and controlled to avoid deductions.

Aerial skiers train extensively in gymnastics and trampolining to develop body awareness and aerial control. Precision is critical, as small mistakes during landing can lead to major score reductions.

Ski Cross

Ski cross is a high-speed racing discipline where four skiers compete at the same time on a downhill course filled with jumps, rollers, and banked turns. Unlike traditional alpine racing, ski cross features direct competition between athletes rather than individual timed runs.

Races are organized in elimination rounds. The top finishers from each heat advance to the next round until a final determines the medalists. Strategy is important, as athletes must choose racing lines, manage overtaking opportunities, and avoid collisions.

Ski cross combines elements of alpine skiing, motocross-style racing, and tactical positioning, making it one of the most exciting freestyle events for spectators.

Slopestyle

Slopestyle takes place on a course filled with rails, jumps, and other terrain park features. Athletes perform a sequence of tricks as they move down the course, using different obstacles to show variety, creativity, and technical skill.

Judges evaluate runs based on difficulty, execution, amplitude, use of features, and overall flow. Athletes aim to link multiple high-difficulty tricks smoothly while maintaining control and originality.

Slopestyle reflects the influence of terrain park skiing and youth culture, with new trick combinations constantly pushing the limits of what is possible.

Halfpipe

Halfpipe competitions take place in a large, U-shaped snow structure. Skiers move back and forth between the walls, launching into the air above the lip to perform spins, flips, and grabs.

Scoring is based on amplitude, difficulty, execution, and overall run composition. Athletes must maintain speed and rhythm while performing multiple tricks in a single run. Flow and consistency are important, as mistakes can disrupt the entire sequence.

Halfpipe requires strong aerial awareness and the ability to maintain balance while transitioning between vertical walls and flat sections.

Big Air

Big air is one of the newest freestyle skiing disciplines at the Olympics. Athletes launch off a single large jump and perform one highly difficult trick. Each competitor usually gets multiple attempts, and the best scores count toward the final result.

The focus is on maximum difficulty, height, and clean execution. Big air highlights progression in trick complexity, as athletes attempt advanced combinations of spins and flips that continue to evolve each season.
