How Many Medal Events Are in Olympic Skating?

Skating is one of the most important groups of sports at the Winter Olympic Games, and it includes three separate disciplines: figure skating, speed skating, and short track speed skating. Each discipline has its own style of competition, rules, and race or performance formats. Together, they make up a large share of the skating medal events at the Olympics.

Figure Skating Medal Events

Figure skating combines athletic skill with artistry and performance. Athletes are judged on jumps, spins, footwork, and overall presentation. At the Winter Olympics, figure skating includes five medal events.

These are men’s singles, women’s singles, pairs skating, ice dance, and the team event. In singles and pairs, skaters perform both short programs and free skates. Ice dance focuses more on rhythm, steps, and connection between partners. The team event brings together skaters from one country across multiple disciplines, with combined scores deciding the medals.

Speed Skating Medal Events

Speed skating takes place on a long oval track, where athletes race in pairs against the clock. It is one of the oldest Winter Olympic sports and focuses on endurance, pacing, and technique. Speed skating includes fourteen medal events at the Olympics.

These events are divided by distance and gender. For men and women, there are races at 500 meters, 1,000 meters, 1,500 meters, 3,000 meters for women, 5,000 meters for men, and longer distance events. Both men and women also compete in the team pursuit, where three skaters work together to set the fastest time, and in the mass start, which is a pack-style race with points and sprint finishes.

Short Track Speed Skating Medal Events

Short track speed skating is raced on a smaller oval inside an ice rink, with several skaters competing at the same time. Unlike long track speed skating, athletes race head-to-head, leading to close finishes, passing, and frequent tactical battles. Short track includes nine medal events at the Winter Olympics.

Men and women compete in individual races at 500 meters, 1,000 meters, and 1,500 meters. There are also relay events, where teams of skaters take turns racing. The mixed team relay, which features both men and women on the same team, adds another event that highlights teamwork and strategy.

Total Skating Medal Events

When figure skating, speed skating, and short track speed skating are combined, skating accounts for a total of twenty-eight medal events at the Winter Olympic Games. This makes skating one of the largest sport categories in the winter program.

These events showcase a wide range of skills, from artistic performance and precise choreography to pure speed and tactical racing. Together, they show how skating at the Olympics goes far beyond one type of competition, offering fans many different ways to see athletes push the limits on ice.
